Abstract
The annual physical examination 1971 was carried out for 10,054 employees in eleven organizations in Seoul by Health Management Office, Hanil Hospital and following results were obtained and analyzed for three major diagnostic entities which were thought to be most important and examined with least error.
1) The prevalence rate of pulmonary tuberculosis in 10, 054 employees was 1.4 percent in average and? was remarkably lower than 4. 8 percent, that of general population, Korea. Talking about P Electric Co., the rate. (1: 6%) has steadily and rapidly reduced since 1965 (4.8%).
2) 9. 1 percent of total employees appeared to be hypertensive and the prevalence even in high-teens and twenties were 1.5 per cent and 4.5 per cent respectively. Prevalence rates in each age group were ¢¥5 to 10 percent lower than ? that of general population but the curves were almost parallel with each other.
3) Of one hundred and twenty three workers in intense sound field of power plants (both thermal and diesel) the audiometric test was done and eleven of them showed loss greater than 40dB. with the picture of C5 dip characteristic in early stage of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). According to the -survey performed before, the noise level in those plants were as high as 98dB. in its peak which may, though not severe, cause hearing loss by prolonged exposure.
4) Standing on the result shown above, some recommendations as following would be made for organizations concerned.
a. The medical record should be maintained perfect and accompany each individual wherever he is assigned to.
b. The physician in charge of health service of each organization should have some professional knowledge in the field of preventive medicine and be in better cooperation with the employer and the contracting hospital.
c. Should the tendency of rapid fall in prevalence rate is considered, control of tuberculosis in these organizations has been successful. Of the hypertension, repeated education on its nature, significance and management is necessary and hypertensive individuals should be carefully excluded through replacement physical examination.
d. Workers in noise environment of electric power plants should wear ear plugs and be put under close supervision by the health officer.
